Not my DID

Back then, we regularly sat in front of the consoles of the large Sun systems – E10000, Fibre Channel, flashing LEDs, familiar routines.

And sometimes this message popped up:

Not my DID.

No alarm, no drama. Just a factual statement from the firmware: This frame is not for me.

In Fibre Channel jargon, “DID” stands for Destination ID – the destination address of a frame.

Over time, this became more than just a technical report.

Whenever someone was at a loss or it was clear that a problem lay elsewhere, the answer was dry:

“Not my DID.”

A small sentence that has remained.

Because it gets to the heart of something that goes far beyond Fibre Channel.

Perhaps there is also an attitude behind it.

Not every enquiry, not every error, not every expectation has to be answered.

You can recognise that: This is not addressed to me.

A piece of serenity, born from the firmware of a fibre channel adapter.
